Mayo’s gift to US Vice President Joe Biden

Major funding boost for Jackie Clarke collection announced

Before the start of the December meeting of Ballina Town Council this week, Mayor Frances McAndrew welcomed the news that Fáilte Ireland has given the go ahead for €1.05 million in funding for the Jackie Clarke Library and collection in the town. The library which is homed in the old provincial bank in the town is tipped to become a major tourist attraction for the north Mayo town when it is opened at the end of next year.

Mayo County Council and Ballina Town Council were both awarded at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards, organised in partnership with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

Controversial Castlebar Independent councillor Frank Durcan slammed the amount of money that will be spent by Mayo County Council on housing and maintaining the Clarke Collection in Ballina. Under the freedom of information act Cllr Durcan received a copy of the contract entered into by Mayo County Council with Mrs Anne Clarke the widow of the late Jackie Clarke who amassed the collection over a number of years.

During the Ballina area meeting councillors and the director of services, Paddy Mahon, made it clear that rumours circulating about the future of the Jackie Clarke Collection were unfounded and the message “loud and clear” was that the collection will remain in Ballina.
